Hey you!
Today I would like to talk to you about something that I have been
asked a lot by people. "Can anyone learn to draw?" – I have been faced
with this question many times.
One other question, that I get asked often is whether any age is too
old to learn art. But, we will talk about that at another time.
A debate that was not even funny
Once when I was watching Family Feud, one of the answers for "an
ability you are born with", included drawing. This made me think a lot.
There are people who actually believe that drawing is a talent that one
is born with.
I disagree wholeheartedly to this notion. In fact, I've even had
pretty heated debates with friends about this. I strongly believe that
anyone can learn art. There are defined steps that can help you get
there.
Talent Vs Learning
I learned art, pretty late into my life. I was around 17 or 18 years
old, when I enrolled at the Arts Center. People tell me that I always
had the knack for art, because I was into video games and graphic
novels.
But, I don't believe this to be true. If you look at the childhood
drawings of the professional artists around you, you will see that they
aren't that great either. In fact, when I saw the drawings I made,
when I first started out, seemed as if I was drawing with my feet!
In fact, they were so bad, that I actually threw them all out.
Looking back, I wish I hadn't done that. Then I could have shown you
guys the difference between my drawing from then and now.
A technical skill
Anyway, getting back to the point. Drawing is like any other
technical skill. You need to learn how to get better. It's surprising
how people dismiss their ability to draw, thinking they are not born
with that talent.
But, ask any professional artist, and they will tell you that, at
some point in their lives, they decided to learn to draw. Many artists,
including Hollywood celebrities, have gone on record stating that
having rules and guidelines limit your scope to learn. This is
absolutely not true!
I think that having rules, can actually help you grow as an artist.
It gives you the guidance you need to develop your skills. I have never
seen a child drawing and thought, "Wow, that is absolutely life-like!"
Developed over the years
Learning to draw, is a skill that needs years of observation, and
understanding the rules of proportion and perspective. You can have a
better eye for the details, but anyone can learn how to draw, with the
right set of rules and guidelines.
What do you think?
Tell me your thoughts on the topic, and what you think about my
doodle, in the comments section of the video. There is also a surprise
announcement for my followers! Check it out, now! . Don't forget our artist pencil case
So when I need to think fast, I keep my pencils strapped to my sketchbook using the arm-adillo. So check out the draw artist bag.
